The ecosystem-based management concept is relatively recent in Quebec. Its gradual setting-up joins in the renewal of the forest practices to answer more adequately the ecological concerns inherent to the concept of sustainable forest development, which contains legal fondations in the law on forests.

Shalom Schwartz established a model with ten common values that gather multiple values into a single category.

The ten Schwartz values and their distribution

Power : Social status and prestige. The ability to control others is important and will be actively sought through dominance of others and control over resources.

Achievement: Set goals and then achieve them. The more challenge, the greater the sense of achievement.

Hedonism : Self-enjoy. Seek pleasure above all things.

Stimulation : The need for stimulation is close to hedonism, though the goal is slightly different. Pleasure here comes more specifically from excitement and thrills.

Universalism : Seek social justice and tolerance for all. Promote peace and equality and find war anathema except perhaps in pursuit of lasting peace.

Benevolance : Give, seek to help others and provide general welfare.

Tradition : Respect to that which has gone before, doing things simply. Adopt a conservative vision in the original sense, seeking to preserve the world order as is.

Conformity : Seek obedience to clear rules and structures. Get a sense of control through doing what is told and conforming to agreed laws and statutes.

Security : Seek health and safety. Welcome the comfort that the existence brings.

Self-direction : Enjoy being independent and outside the control of others. The prefer freedom and may have a particular creative or artistic bent, which they seek to indulge whenever possible.
