The ecosystem-based management of boreal forest in Quebec

The ecosystem-based management concept is relatively recent in Quebec. Its gradual setting-up joins in the renewal of the forest practices to answer more adequately the ecological concerns inherent to the concept of sustainable forest development, which contains legal fondations in the law on forests.

The certification of the forest surfaces appears as a voluntary and transparent process to establish a frame of management in compliance with the principles of sustainable development of forests. The forest certification aims at guaranteeing that forests are managed in the respect for the on a local scale regional and national values.

Before 2008
The demarcation of the units of forest management and the north limit of the commercial wooden attributions
Gouvernemental linkAccording to the article 35.2 of the Law on forests, the Minister establishes and makes public, at the latest on September 1st, 2002, the new demarcation of the units of organization (Law on forests up to date on April 2nd, 2002).
The public consultations on the demarcation of the units of forested organization and the northern movement of the limit of the commercial wooden attributions were held in spring, 2002. On the whole, 20 memories were put down by associations and national bodies and five by autochtonous communities. The regional councils of development held consultations in 13 administrative regions.
The stabilization of the units of management obtains certain consensus in the reading of the memories. However, the points of view diverge as regards the recommended means. The northern movement of the limit of the commercial wooden attributions causes certain number of social, economic and environmental impacts. So, we consider important to press any possible reserved option this way on scientific studies.
